An area of outstanding beauty.– Nicholas Stevens
It was music to an architect's ears when Nicholas Stevens of Stevens Lawson Architects was approached by his client - "an enthusiastic character" - to create Te Mānia.
Stevens soon realised his client was not afraid to break with convention and wanted to be challenged and excited by the architecture.
The result is a sculptural, rusting steel structure, designed for entertaining in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay region. Vitrocsa sliding doors frame spectacular views of the river, lake, orchards and dramatic Te Mata Peak.
Complementing the main building, separated for retreat, Stevens Lawson designed two cave-like, sleeping houses for guests.
We travelled to New Zealand's premier wine making region with The Local Project to capture the buildings, taste the wines and of course, meet our wonderful, enthusiastic host. We were not disappointed!
